This is how I remember the Malay ladies in those days after Merdeka. In those days when religion had yet to tell the Malay ladies how they should or should not dress. And you can see that there was grace, and beauty in the way they dress. They looked decent without the tudungs and they looked respectable even if they were, by today’s Islamic standards, seemingly uncovered without the Hijabs. I do remember this Malay lady well and with much affection and love for she is my Mother and standing with her, is me.

Today Malay ladies will find it hard to rival the Malay ladies that I remember from that time when they could dress as they think fit to bring out their femininity…to embrace their physical beauty and yet be decent enough to conceal that beauty from over prying eyes.

Today religion has gone overboard to control not only the way these Malay ladies dress but also to relegate Malay ladies to a level of servitude in their daily lives. Enough said lest I am branded a religious recalcitrant!
