I am constantly reminded that within the ranks of Pakatan Harapan there are individuals who were once the very essence of the politics that Umno calls it’s own. Dedak, the end justifies the means, political patronage, factionalism, vested interests and all the varied nuances of politics that we now abhors that has become synonimous with Umno. A Leopard never loses it’s spots, the Zebra never its stripes and Mahathir always return to Langkawi….we hold these truths to be self evident. Will those who have left Umno for Pakatan Harapan leave Umno behind or will Umno follow them into Pakatan Harapan? The jury is still out on that and so we wait.
We Malaysians memang mudah lupa…or possibly we would prefer that we be typecast as the perpetual lot of people whose ability to “adjust” to the changing realities around them with the same ease that a chameleon can change itself to its surroundings. Consider our almost total surrender to the leadership of Mahathir today, to the time only a few years back, when Mahathir was merely an old man of politics whose ability to comment on the politics of the day was tolerated by all of us with some degree of tolerance and reverence – depending upon your political inclinations. Consider also Anwar Ibrahim now, as opposed to the Anwar Ibrahim then….then he was a caged warrior whose very presence in Malaysia, albeit incarcerated in Bamboo River, was a major irritant to the government of the day and now he is Prime Minister designate but a Prime Minister designate that has begun to irritate the very people who once looked upon him as their political saviour of sorts.
Then there is Lim Kit Siang, Mahyuddin, Lim Guan Eng, Mat Sabu, Azmin, Azizah, Rafizi Ramli and a host of other individuals who were then in the opposition and are now in government…..consider how democracy can really work and consider how when it works, it changes individuals into Gods and Demi Gods on a turn of a coin…however tight and difficult that turn may be…but that is what democracy does….it makes possible a government for the people, by the people and of the people.
Now the questions that arises, is simply this….we the people now understand how democracy can work in Malaysia. Do those in Pakatan Harapan do?
And that is why, you need to go back to the first paragraph of this article that asks…“Will those who have left Umno for Pakatan Harapan leave Umno behind or will Umno follow them into Pakatan Harapan?”
In these coming weeks there will be reasons a plenty for you all to ask yourselves, and those around you, that question again and again as those in Pakatan Harpan, now settling down in Putrajaya, struggle to deal with what they said in opposition and what they can do in government. They will struggle to fulfil the needs of their own political ideals and the wants of their own political faithfuls who have been with them through thick and thin for many reasons – some for party, some for self. And more worrying for us all is that perennial questions that follows every Malaysian politician of today ……how does he/she secures his/her place in the scheme of things to come?
Thankfully, we reverently hope, these question will not trouble our numero uno…Tun Dr Mahathir. We hope that Tun is driven by one matalamat and one matalamat only….To MAKE MALAYSIA GREAT AGAIN….and everything he has said, done and said he will do gives me hope that not only will he try to make Malaysia great again….but he can Malaysian great again. The proof of all this is now in the doing of it all…and it starts with his Cabinet. So far so good.
So these are the thoughts that are now swirling in my head. We must all try to give Tun and the people chosen by him to be with him, enough time, adequate space and some trust that they will be a government of the people. I say “some” trust because as Reagan likes to say “Trust but verify”….and this is what we have to do with the Pakatan Harapan that we have elected to government. …Trust but Verify.
Enough for this morning…early days yet. I have still a few things to write about “trust” in some of the people now in government but I have written enough in these last few days. So I will wait for now. Wait to see if those who have left Umno for Pakatan Harapan has left Umno behind or has Umno followed them into Pakatan Harapan!
