Out With The Old?
In Malaysia, politicians never fade away. They leave one political party to join another political party. They profess to abandon their friends of the past and present, make new ones and then go back to the old to renew old ties and do a coalition government of any kind. Some will retire but are “reluctantly” persuaded to return to politics to serve King, country, and themselves.
The draw of money and politics, politics and money – in any manifestations – is too strong. The spoils of political office are only for winners. And you cannot win when you are out of politics. And so politicians in Malaysia do not fade away. They fade in and out of political parties. Fade in and out of political friends and enemies. And most disconcerting for everyone else, they never fade away.
