S E D I H…..
Selamat Pagi Malaysia.
This morning I was confronted by these hauntingly sad images of children begging for food. These are not children of foreign beggars that we sometimes see on our streets with their parents, being taught to beg. These are hungry children of Malaysians having to beg for food. And most of these children are Malays. In my 73 years of living there are a few things I know you will not find the Malays doing.
You do not normally see the Malays sending their aged parents to homes to be looked after by others. The Malays take care of their own aged parents themselves, though we do hear from time to time of Malay parents being abandoned by their children…but these instances are still very rare and frowned upon by other Malays.
You do not hear of Malays going overseas to work as servants in more affluent countries, though even this is also changing ever so slowly as the dire financial needs of families forces members of that family to seek work and do any work they can, anywhere they can – and that include working as servants elsewhere abroad.
You do not see large numbers of Malay families living on the streets..as we do now. And most confronting of all, we are now see Malay families living on the streets with their children – children who know no other life than the one they are now living, in the streets of our nations. And these children, among other things, are having to beg to fill their hungry stomachs.
For sure there will be children of the other races doing the same thing as families are forced to adjust to the new normal that all Malaysian have to endure, that of living in a Malaysia that is no longer able to provide for the needs of its most vulnerable rakyat…the young, the poor, the aged and the neediest who are now living in poverty on the streets on Malaysia. And all this is now happening on the streets of Malaysia in plain view of all of us. Confronting images of the most vulnerable of all Malaysian….our young begging for food on the streets of Chow Kit and anywhere else where they now live in numbers that are increasing by the day.
Surely those political pariahs in Putrajaya are not blind to all that is now happening around them? But they are! Look around you and see how these political pariahs live! See how much they spend on their houses, their cars, the weddings of their children! What handbags, watches, and apparel they wear! How some of them gloat that a million or so ringgit is just pocket money to them. When will all this stop? When will our poor and needy have food to eat, decent roofs over their heads, and the means to earn a living and have their children go to school and be educated? When will Jakim spend their billions taking care of poor Muslim children now begging for food on the streets of our nations?
We must now stop to think of how these hungry children that now have to beg for food, can be fed. We must now start to think about how to provide not only for their needs but also for the needs of other Malaysians now facing poverty in numbers that have never been seen in our nation before. If we do not now do all this, then surely the “caring” society that we were all once part of, will soon be no more! I can only write about all this sadness that now confronts too many of our people on the streets of our nations….maybe some of you can do more. Maybe some of you want to do more! Do not wait for others to do what has to be done to help our most needy. Do not wait for this government to do what it can. Please go do these things yourself. Do what you must and what you can to make life better for fellow Malaysians who are most in need. Do it now!
