Malaysia is a multi-ethnic state. Apart from the three major ethnic groups, there are also the often-neglected communities—the Orang Asli and Aborigines.
The Orang Asli and Aborigines make up about 14% of the population in Malaysia.
They have been living on this land for a much longer period than the Malays, Chinese and Indians. The Orang Asli and Aborigines are recognized as Bumiputera according to the Federal Constitution, and they get to enjoy special status of Bumiputera. However, they are in fact among the most marginalised communities in Malaysia, especially the Aborigines of Peninsula Malaysia.
Are the laws sufficient in protecting the rights and welfare of Orang Asli and Aborigines? What are their struggles? As Malaysians, we barely look into this issue.
