“Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban!”
We are now at the DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) stage of political life for Din.
** A do-not-resuscitate order, or DNR order, is a medical order written by a doctor. It instructs health care providers not to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if a patient’s breathing stops or if the patient’s heart stops beating. What is a DNR? Ideally, a DNR order is created, or set up, before an emergency occurs.*
One thing is certain, he will not see out the term of his present tenure which has just over two years to run. What is uncertain is when he will go. Din’s appointment and continued survival as prime minister are wholly, totally, and completely supported by and at the pleasure of Umno and Pas. For various reasons, that support is now suspect. Din is now fighting for his political survival. When politicians are fighting for their political life, as we had seen in the recent past with Tun Razak, Tengku Razali, Musa Hitam, Anwar Ibrahim, Tun Mahathir, Najib and now Muhyiddin, anything goes. They set up new political parties, leap from one party to another, political friends become enemies and political enemies become friends, and when all else fails, you declare an Emergency. None of them, I repeat, none of them went to the people to ask for a fresh mandate to govern. So perish the thought that Din will want to do that this time around.
In all honesty, I do not know what will happen in the coming days. I have my thoughts and my druthers but common sense tells me that the only possible outcome if Umno can hold itself together, will be an Umno prime minister. And again common sense tells me that whoever is president of Umno, will be prime minister….if Umno can hold itself together. Whether it can or not is a work in progress. And the next few days will see a determination of this, one way of the other. If Umno falls apart, then all bets are off.
Until a general election is called, you and I are merely spectators to a process where the ends justify the means. The ends is political power. The means are only limited by the imaginations of its participants because the “winner take all” mentality prevails at all levels of political life in Malaysia. And when in all this mix you inject religion, then my friends, you have what you have in Malaysia today! Total political anarchy. A 24/7 political conundrum that sucks up everything that is decent and rational within us all leaving us with nothing to live for…….not even hope.
And in all this chaos and tragic circumstance, what does Din do? He wants the King to agree to his advice to declare an Emergency!
Ironic is it not? That the Royal institution that Tun Mahathir and Anwar Ibrahim waged war against to curb their reputation and influence, is today, by common consensus, the very institution most respected and revered by Malaysians to resolve the present political impasse! The King and his brother Sultans are today the last bastion standing against the tyranny of corrupt and arrogant politicians hell-bent on imposing their will upon the rakyat. Daulat Tuanku may the wisdom of our King and his brother Rulers see us through these dark days of political hubris.
These are interesting times that we are now living in. I am hopeful that there is enough collective wisdom among us Malaysians to live through these dark days when politicians think that Malaysia belongs to them and that Malaysians will stand and do nothing when their right to earn a decent living to care for and protect their family is threatened by the antics of these politicians.
“Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban!” which means “I will fight as long as I will live” is the Iban Rentap battle cry of the Royal Rangers Regiment. It should also be our battle cry against anybody that threatens to take from us our way of life, our means to earn a decent living, and the future of generations of Malaysians to come. Enough said.
