IN MIND POLITICS

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad. Perdana Menteri Malaysia

There have been many things said of Tun. Good, bad, evil, good… it runs the gauntlet of everything and anything you can say of any individual  – what more of one who has spent almost all of his adult and declining years in Politics. I have my opinion of Tun built and acquired out of my interest in him initially as a crusading angel that would do good for the Malays when he first became PM, right up to today, when, at an age when we mortals have been put to pasture, at 94, Tun is to me, again the crusading angel who has saved us all from a fate worse than death: that of having to endure another term of government under that kleptocratic Najib and his devious Rosmah. Throughout those many years, I have not been shy to tell Tun what I thought of his ways. Suffice to say that should I ever had the privilege to meet him face to face, there will be things I would want to say to his face, one on one.

First I will want to thank him for his services to the nation. Then, if Tun will have the time of day for me, I will want to ask him why he did the things he did. Why Tun saw the need to consolidate political power in his person and in the process compromised the independence of the Judiciary, the various authorities and government itself, compromised all this in order to serve the agendas and purpose of politicians. And then I will want to ask him why was he was unable to bring out the best out of the Malays and the non-Malays and instead was able to only encourage the worst in the Malays by his attempt to advance the Bumiputra agenda. Anything else I can talk about with Tun will be a bonus.

I know there is one thing I will not ask of Tun! I will not ask Tun if he is corrupt. I will not ask Tun if he had ever profited personally during his time as prime minister. I will not ask him this not because I fear or am concern about my personal safety should I do that. I will not ask him that because, in all the time that I have known of Tun and what Tun has done in the service of the Nation, this is one man who is not corrupt. And because I know this for a fact, I am wondering why so many of you have accused him of being corrupt. All you guys telling me that Tun is corrupt, please, is there something you know that I do not know? If there is, please share it with me. Do not just say that Tun is corrupt…please provide us with specifics. When was Tun corrupt? Which project? Which tender? Which proposal or project submitted to the government was decided in favour of anyone because money was given to Tun for that favour? When was the money paid? How much? Which Bank Account, local, overseas or the Cayman Islands. Please give us those details so that we can know how corrupt Tun is. Do not just accuse Tun of being corrupt because you think he is. Because you have heard that he is….because dear friend, in my decade of blogging, there has never been a moment when I had questioned the integrity of Tun as PM of our Nation.

And nor am I questioning his integrity as PM today!

And please my friends, I am talking about Tun NOT being corrupt. I am not talking about Tun using all the political power at his disposal to advance his political agenda. I am not talking about Tun helping family and friends to do business. I am not talking about Tun making all those bad decisions when helping family and friends and those bad decisions he has made in choosing his likely successors. I am talking about a man who has done his best to advance the interest of all Malaysians. That his best is sometimes not good enough can be debated and argued upon…but you cannot argue that Tun has done his best for our people, our nation and hopefully, in the time he has left, he will not make Anwar Ibrahim his successor and Tun will put in place the foundation for future generations to succeed when Tun himself has at times, failed.
