It was a sad day today. We lost our Minister to the game of politics and that is the reality we all have to face today. Amidst cries for education to be spared from political games, it remains just that… only cries.
There is a lot to learn from this and with a heavy heart, I am writing this so as to educate my fellow Msians, of what I believe was in play. While we try to find fault and search for those to be blamed for his resignation, it has been very clear to me that it is us, the Malays, who hauled him down to his knees. A lot of speculations are out there but let me bring your attention to a chilling revelation.
What I am going to share is just my personal view based on the limited knowledge that I have on the issue at hand.
The whole notion would be something new to many but I am going to explain it in simple terms so that even our young impressionable Msians in schools would understand it. And I urge all my friends out there to help me translate or synthesize this if necessary. Many have asked me why I have kept all my posts in English, nope it’s not because I loathe my beloved Bahasa Kebangsaan but because I do not want the headache to deal with ‘rempit’ feedbacks.
So here goes…
My dear ‘Melayu Mudah Lupa’ (I am quoting someone else)… we have been the victim of one of the biggest behavioural microtargeting scheme ever since the GE14. Through orchestrated and systematic behavioural engineering we have been conditioned to hate Dr. Maszlee Malik from day 1.
While many believed that he was brought down by inexperienced and bad communications team, it is way beyond that. Welcome to the dawn of the new era of big data and IR4.0.
Through intelligent data mining, we have been profiled and conditioned to make choices that we believe are the best to be made. It is not a conspiracy theory, it is the reality of the world today. And that was what happened to many of us, Malays especially when we were fed with news that touched our nerves. We fell prey to ill-intent psychographic segmentation.
To really understand what data mining, microtargeting and psychographic analysis are all about, I would urge everyone to google Cambridge Analytica & Invoke Malaysia. While these companies may not be the cause of MM’s downfall, it was through such tactics that we all succumbed to commit this spiteful character assassination that was beyond repair.
Alas, it is our own doing. You know what, we should be proud of this, we did it! Menteri Kasut Hitam akhirnya tumpas! Kita Berjaya! Namun, berjaya untuk apa??? We are not too sure now, are we? What have we achieved by removing MM?
I asked everyone in my Lagenda Kasut Hitam post, do we have a better candidate? And I ask everyone again now, do we?…sigh. Melayu bukan sahaja mudah lupa tetapi mudah juga dimanupilasi, ditipu, dipermainkan. We laughed out loud at our minister of education, without realizing many others are laughing at us.
I am not too sure how best can I say this.. My dear Melayu Mudah Lupa, while we may easily forget this episode, I hope we would all learn something from this. We must cease to be ‘empty’ keyboard warriors. We must stop falling prey to intended manipulation. Be smart. Read well. Verify your sources always.
And this goes to all my friends in the teaching fraternity… caution our children well against behavioural engineering and microtargeting strategy. We are being targeted on a daily basis through all the social media platforms that we are active on, but we must not react or over-react by what is fed to us without thinking… without rationalising… without intelligence!
Everyday we are being studied… when we google, when we communicate on socmed, when we make online purchases, when we post things on fb, when we download certain apps etc. A pattern will emerge to eventually tell people the kind of person we are. Like the things that makes us happy, sad or angry, the things that would touch our raw nerves and things that are close to our heart. And these things will be used to get our attention, manipulated to serve a purpose without us realising it.
Take our PISA results for example. Just look at how the picture of hopeless Msia was painted and strategically manipulated to show that we fared terribly against other countries. 79 countries took part in the study but in a chart used in the latest article, Msia was placed alongside countries of high economies. Belittling our DG, our Minister and all the efforts put in by all our hardworking teachers out there.
Why compare us to these high income nations? Comparing us to US, Britain, Canada, Japan, Australia and China is just a little unfair, don’t you think? These countries took more than 15 years or even beyond to be where they are whilst we have only embarked on our transformation journey merely 6 years ago. And yet many fell for it. Believing the worst. Hopping on the bandwagon of insult and disparage.
One thing is for sure, the more active we are on socmed, the more we open up ourselves to be targeted. Using psychographic analysis, we are segmented and microtargeted with the right messages that are meant to make us react the way it was designed to be. Today, many unscrupulous party have used such tactics to spread lies and oftentimes the tactics have proven successful. One of the biggest success, of course, is the case of Dr. Maszlee Malik. Sadly, no amount of petition is going to make a difference.
Although many said he was actually sacked, honestly, would that make a difference at all? Those who are close to him or have worked for him would know he has always detested political games. He does not play politics not by lack of skills or intelligence but because he REFUSED to play it at all, period. Perhaps, since we are so easily swayed and influenced, we might as well have one who can play good politics and hire a fantastic stratcomm team to address ‘us’.
So who would be next? Many would not agree but honestly, we need young blood! Hopefully not some soon-to-be-retired, decorated soldier to lead this portfolio. Know this my friends… MoE is the custodian to some 5 mil students data from pre-school to tertiary. Now that you know about behavioural engineering and microtargeting, you must now understand that any ruthless party (individual or otherwise) that have access to this rich data, has the power to manipulate the future of this country!
Well good for you Dr. Maszlee Malik, I salute you for taking a stand. You will forever be remembered as the one who refused to give in to political games. We know how much you care for the teachers and children and they in turn, love you for who you are. Yes, this is not a game for the honest few. This is Malaysian Politics where racial dispute is still the favourite ‘modal’ and slander the favourite ‘food’. Take care, sir.
p.s. Pls laa, it is not because of the Jawi issue lah!
